Discover Our Curated Selection: From Dry Reds to Qvevri Amber Wines

Silk Road Wines imports and distributes natural wines from the country of Georgia. Winemaking in Georgia stretches back over 8,000 years of history making it the world’s oldest wine-producing country. Our products originate from the lush mountainside vineyards of eastern Kakheti, Georgia’s premiere grape growing region that boasts both historical relics as well as stunning landscapes. Our goal is to introduce our clients to the oldest and most distinctive wines in the world. Therefore, we have limited our selection to wines that have been subject to rigorous sampling and critiques to ensure a premium quality product. What really makes our wines special is their origin from the country that is the birthplace of wine, whose inhabitants have carried down traditional production methods for centuries so that to this day, we are able to enjoy flavors that can be found nowhere else.

The qvevri is Georgia’s most important and best-known winemaking vessel, and it remains the centerpiece of traditional winemaking in Georgia.  We have a selection of wines that are made using the ancient qvevri method. Our amber wines are produced by using white grapes which include the skins during fermentation to give the wine additional flavor and color, known as skin contact wine. Previously, this type of wine was limited to production only in Eastern Europe and some parts of Italy, but has started to grow immensely popular with people around the world due to its incredible flavor and stunning colors. In addition to our qvevri wines, we also offer a dry white wine as well as our dry and semi-sweet reds using indigenous Georgian grape varieties. We are incredibly proud of our products and thankful to the country of Georgia for introducing winemaking to the world.

History of Wine from Georgia

The country is considered the birthplace of winemaking. It became known that archaeologists attribute the beginning of the production of wine made in Georgia to the period about 8,000 years ago. Local experts left wild grape juices in earthen vessels. Over time, under the influence of wild yeast, they turned into alcoholic must.

A separate pride is the traditional method of fermentation in qvevri. According to it, ceramic amphorae were buried in the ground, and the technique is still used. In 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

Modern winemaking has preserved this ancient practice and combines it today with modern technologies. Both qvevri and steel or oak containers are used to produce the final product.

Georgian Wine Buy Online: How to Make a Choice

The reviews say that the success of your meal and dinner depends on how correctly you select the variety or type and the already prepared dish.

When choosing Georgian wine online, it is essential to study the following points:

  • Types of fermentation. Traditional qvevri products are characterized by “earthiness” and tannins, while the European method gives a softer taste.
  • Region of origin. Pay attention to Kakheti, famous for Saperavi and other rich ones, Imereti—aromatic whites, and Karti, which takes a sustainable organic approach to production.
  • Clusters and style. European varieties such as Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane produce famous white options, kuvevri—amber, semi-sweet, dry, or semi-dry—for every taste.

For more detailed information on choosing, visit our special section, which helps beginners and even connoisseurs of aromatic and exquisite drinks.

What to Serve With Meat

Some dense, rich flavors of red varieties are perfect for steaks or other meat dishes. Reserve Saperavi, with noticeable woody notes and spices, or KindzMarauli, with berry sweetness and a velvety aftertaste, are good choices.

The Best Options for Fish

Fish or seafood are ideally served with Manavi Mtsvane, a light, citrusy, and refreshing white option. It is the simplest choice for all food lovers.

What to Order with Vegetables

With premium light and natural wines, stewed or grilled peppers or potatoes will become even tastier. We offer MaNavi, a white one with fragility and mineral transparency that emphasizes the freshness of vegetables. We also provide white semi-sweet AlaZani for admirers of a soft and fruity shade.
